Dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Burnett

Dorothy Burnett passed away peacefully on 3rd April 2018, just months after her husband Colin. They were both active until the end, laughing and enjoying life to the full. Dorothy moved to Taunton as a teenager during the war and was educated at Bishop Fox’s School. She returned to her native Yorkshire to train as a nurse, and was always proud that she was one of the first student nurses in the new NHS in 1948. She returned to Taunton after qualifying and worked on the children’s ward at Musgrove Park Hospital. She met Colin in Taunton – introduced to her as a good Yorkshire man - and they were married in 1957. Dorothy went on to become the Senior Sister in the Family Planning Clinic in Taunton and then took up a teaching post at Somerset College of Arts and Technology. There she taught on the pre-nursing course, helping many young people to become carers, whether nannies, nurses, or social workers. Dorothy loved to encourage young people to reach their potential and she kept in touch with many of her students, describing them as her second family. Dorothy and Colin were both active in the local community throughout their lives. Colin taught on the adult literacy scheme, teaching adults to read, albeit with a Yorkshire accent! They loved to dance, and until the end they were dancing at least once, if not twice a week. Dorothy and Colin were happily married for over 60 years, celebrating their Diamond Wedding in 2017 with their children, grandchildren and their many, many friends.
